Deep ecology is an environmental philosophy, which concludes rethinking the way that we, human beings, live and how to achieve a sustainable lifestyle. In this blog, I am going to focus on the thoughts of Arne Næss, the consequences of pollution and how this affects the wildlife. In addition, I am going to reflect on how this is connected.
Arne Næss was a Norwegian philosopher and the founders of the term “deep ecology”. This ideology combines philosophy and environmental issues. The term was intended to adjust the lifestyles of our humanity towards a sustainable world and it still is. However, few changes have been made.
According to the Encyclopedia of Earth, human factors such as population growth, consumption per person, and values have become a major influence on Earth’s climate and have caused the temperature to rise. Consequently, the animals, especially those who are endangered or threatened, will either adapt to the climate or maybe disappear for ever. Therefore it is important to minimize the consumptions, especially here in the industrial country, where we do not have to develop a country. In addition, the industrial countries have the most of the consumptions per person, and therefore the biggest responsibility. However to keep the temperature from rising, the humanity has to ask them self on a daily basis: Is my action, that pollutes, more important than the environment to the species, which also can result with their death? What are the consequences of my action? What opportunities do I have? An important aspect of the Deep Ecology is that all living creatures have the same right to live and expand their habitants. In addition to cover the basic needs. Further, you must think about the wildlife, nature and the future generations, before you make up your mind. Your decision should be based on the ethical model of consequences to follow the ideology of the Deep Ecology.
The wildlife is not only threatened by pollution, but also by overhunting. According to Searching 10, the buffalo in North America almost died out, as a result of overhunting. For a certain period the hunters were going after the horns and tusks from the African elephants and the black rhinos. Clearly, horns and tusks are not essential for us, human beings. But still, in parts of the world, the populations are not aware of the consequences and therefore are not having a sustainable lifestyle. Since the humanity is depending on food, clothing and building materials from animals and plants, we can see that in order to survive, we have to help each other.
To sum up, the deep ecology is intending to make people aware of the consequences of pollution and wanting them to adjust to nature, and to create a sustainable environment for all living organisms. The living organisms is essential for the humanity in order to survive, therefore we have to take responsibility for the planet that we live on. Overhunting and pollution is threatening their habitants, as well as their lives. Know is the time to make a change!
